Jianyan Village in Xinglong Subdistrict of Longshan County boasts abundant resources, unique ethnic folk customs and beautiful natural scenery. The Pukouche River flows through it, injecting vitality into the village. Jianyan Village is making efforts to increase villagers’ income and promote rural revitalization through the integrated development of agriculture and cultural tourism.
Located on the border of Western Hunan, with inconvenient transportation and weak industries, Jianyan Village has difficulty in its development. In 2021, the rural revitalization working team of the Education Department of Hunan Province settled in Jianyan Village and explored a new path for its development through culture. In 2023, the working team led by Liu Yanqi made efforts to help the village develop new agriculture, create new ecological environment and improve its governance.
In recent years, Jianyan Village has worked to optimize the rural governance system, promote industrial innovation, and improve the living environment. It was rated as the Prefectural-level Beautiful Rural Demonstration Site in 2023.
It has embarked on a high-quality development path of ecological beauty and prosperous industries. A village-level professional planting and breeding cooperative has been established in the village. There are 300 mu (20 hectares) of tea and 500 mu (33.33 hectares) of navel oranges planted here.
With the help of the working team, the village has built a 9-kilometer agricultural product transportation road winding around the mountain, connecting the navel orange industry base and the tea base. Boxes of navel oranges and canned tea are transported to other places, consolidating the cornerstone of development for its agricultural products.
In order to enhance the core competitiveness of rural brands, the working team has registered trademarks and designed packaging for agricultural and sideline products such as mooncakes to create characteristic agricultural product brands. It has also carried out order-oriented cooperation with some units of the education system to coordinate the production and sales of agricultural and sideline products, so as to help villagers to increase income.
Jianyan Village has developed the characteristic handicraft industry to advance the collective economic development and enrich villagers. At the same time, relying on the Danxia landform and Red resources, it has made every effort to create a rural complex integrating tea, fruit, vegetables, spring water, and study tour.
The working team sought funds of nearly 10 million yuan to develop a batch of cultural and tourism projects that integrate culture, tourism, and agriculture. The Helongqiao Red Education Base, the Modern Agriculture Experience Base, and the Jianyan Mountain Outdoor Base have been set up and have received 12,000 primary and secondary school students for study tours.
In 2022, the village collective operating income hit over 800,000 yuan, and it is expected to exceed 1 million yuan this year. In the future, a demonstration village for development through cultural empowerment and an agricultural practice base for primary and secondary school students will also be established in Jianyan Village.
Jianyan Village has built a party and mass service center and ancillary facilities of approximately 1,400 square meters and implemented 43 service items. Besides, a leisure park and a “reading cabin” have been created. The walls of rural courtyards along the way are decorated with colorful 3D three-dimensional paintings.
In addition, the working team has provided vocational skills training such as home services and childcare for local villagers with vocational colleges to improve the skill level of villagers, and implemented the targeted talent program to cultivate a batch of local talents engaged in rural revitalization.
Jianyan Village has worked to revitalize rural resources and stimulated the internal motivation of the masses to build a village with strong agriculture, beautiful environment, and well-off people.
